NIT Chat Privacy Policy
This policy explains how NIT Chat collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use the NIT Chat website or mobile app.
Information we collect
- Account information: your display name, phone number, password hash, avatar colour, and any profile photo you choose to upload.
- Messages and media: messages, reactions, read status, typing status, and photos or status updates you send through NIT Chat.
- Contacts: if you grant the mobile app contact permission, it reads phone numbers from your device contacts and sends those numbers to NIT Chat only to identify which contacts use the service. Contact names are not uploaded for matching.
- Device and notification data: an Expo push token is stored when you enable notifications, so NIT Chat can deliver message notifications to that device.
- Preferences: settings such as sound, notification, and dark-mode preferences are stored on your device.
How we use information
We use this information to create and secure your account, deliver chats, media, status updates, contact matching, online and typing indicators, message notifications, and to maintain and improve the service.
How information is shared
Your profile information, messages, media, presence, reactions, and status updates are shared with the NIT Chat users you interact with as needed to provide the service. Notification tokens are sent to Expo’s push-notification service to deliver notifications. NIT Chat does not sell personal information or use it for advertising.
Storage and retention
Account data and chat content are stored on NIT Chat’s server while an account remains active. Device preferences remain on your device. We may retain limited information when necessary for security, fraud prevention, backups, or legal obligations.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards intended to protect information in transit and at rest. No service can guarantee absolute security. NIT Chat messages are not end-to-end encrypted, so do not use the service for highly sensitive information.
Your choices
You can update your display name, profile photo, password, and notification preferences in Settings. You can deny or revoke device permissions for contacts, photos, and notifications in your device settings. You may request access, correction, or deletion of your account information by contacting us.
Children
NIT Chat is not directed to children under 13. Do not use NIT Chat if you are under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service changes. The latest version will always be available at this address, with its updated date shown above.
